Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya's most iconic safari destinations — a place where enormous elephant herds roam freely against the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak. At just 392 square kilometres, Amboseli packs extraordinary wildlife into a compact, easily navigable reserve.

At Kega Safaris, Amboseli is one of our most requested destinations — and once you've seen a herd of 50 elephants silhouetted against Kilimanjaro at sunrise, you'll understand why.

Quick fact: Amboseli is home to some of the largest elephant tuskers in Africa. The park's elephant population is one of the most studied in the world, with researchers tracking families going back over 50 years.

Why Visit Amboseli?

Amboseli offers something no other park in Africa can — the combination of massive elephant herds and the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro rising 5,895 metres above the plains. On a clear morning, the views are simply extraordinary.

Best Time to Visit Amboseli

Amboseli can be visited year-round but the best game viewing is during the dry seasons — January to March and June to October. During these months, animals congregate around the swamps in the park centre, making them easy to find and photograph.

The clearest Kilimanjaro views are typically in January and February — the mountain is often shrouded in clouds during the rainy season. Early mornings offer the best chance of seeing the summit clearly before clouds build up around 9am.

Wildlife in Amboseli

Elephants are undoubtedly the stars of Amboseli. The park is famous for its large-tusked bulls and massive family herds that move slowly across the dusty plains. Early morning game drives often yield extraordinary encounters with these magnificent animals.

Beyond elephants, Amboseli offers excellent sightings of lions — often seen resting near the swamps — as well as cheetahs on the open plains, large buffalo herds, zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, and hyenas. Leopards are present but more elusive.
